Prior to last season, I remember seeing something in a publication that later would make me chuckle. However, when you think of who Creighton Prep usually lines up in their backfield year after year, maybe that reporter had just flat out failed to realize ANY Running ba…

June showers bring all-star games in Nebraska. And for two straight Saturdays, Hastings College is the place to be.
This week HC hosts the annual Shrine Soccer Classic with the best graduated high school seniors meeting up in a girls-boys doubleheader. The event seems to have found a nice home in Hastings, and the rain may actually stay away for this one.
On June 20 is the annual Sertoma Eight-Man All-Star Game where the top players from the smaller schools get their chance to shine. While the I…

Every once in a while, a young man in Nebraska High School Sports really knocks you off your feet….I mean really catches your eye and keeps you awake at night wondering how talented he is. Every father in the State who has a son wonders what the recipe is for creating an outstanding athlete like this. Wherein lies the secret every Dad seeks to unlock that will magically transform this son of his into one of Nebraska’s best High school athletes? Well, Fathers, I have not unlocked that secret, but…

Another State Track Meet in the books, and a new experience for me in the Press Box. I sorely missed not being able to be down by the action to talk to some of the kids, but the old man can’t go like before and the “Box” was better than missing it altogether. In fact, I was very impressed at how well we were treated up there. Yes, it WAS warm and the sun prevented you from seeing your screen in the AM and early PM, but these things can’t be helped. I felt privileged to be there and applaud the p…

FIRST OF A FOUR PART SERIES
Track is undoubtedly the toughest sport to predict, given all the variables that figure in. Kind of like Horse Racing. OK, I may be bold (or foolhardy), but I going to take a stab at p…

Oh Baby, is that a loaded question or what? An article in the Lincoln Journal-Star Friday roused around 150 comments, most of them strong and some not very pretty.
In fact, some were down right derogatory, mostly from the metro folks who claim Omaha people (especially) won’t travel…

Both Grand Island and Kearney submitted bids to host the state volleyball tournament for 2010 and 2011as the cities once again try to wrestle the tournament away from Lincoln.
The Lincoln Journal-Star reports the capital city's bid included a cash incentive to be used for facility rental of $60,000. That's up from $55,000 from the last bid two years ago.Lincoln's bid proposed to use the Devaney Center for finals in 2010 and 2012 and the NU Coliseum in 2011. The Coliseum isn't available if the H…

Well, at the urging of a few key people, I have decided to undertake this huge project. When you do not have the luxury of ballot sheets from coaches state-wide, you just have to record every conversation you have had with hoops coaches, scribes and knowledgeable people around…

I noticed that you commented on Lars Backward from Hay Springs in your pre-state tournament article. Just a note to you that he scored his 1005th point for his high school career at the consolation game against Hayes Center.

Here are my picks for the up coming boys state tournament. Sorry I couldn’t pick all the area teams to win, but some have really tough first-round matchups.
The toughest was Hampton. The Hawks head for coach Jerry Eickhoff’s final weekend of action after 40 years in the business and they have to open state play against No. 1 Ewing. Ouch. Eickhoff will have his team ready, but this is going to be a tough one. If the Hawks can keep the score in the 40s they have a shot. Litchfield will also have a…

I caught 4 games at the Girls State Tournament today and it was quite a kick experiencing my first ever try at that. I’m ashamed to say I’ve never been in attendance before, but solemnly promise it won’t happen again….too much fun!
The neatest to see is families together having a great time. That is nothing short of precious. Seems like family members are so busy, time together is a rare commodity.
That’s one of the reasons I like 3rd Place games. Just gives those who hit the State as a family…

I'm sitting courtside at Pershing Auditorium watching Ravenna roll past Cambridge in a Class C-2 state semifinal game. The Bluejays also won the Class C-2 state volleyball championship last fall, but it just hit me that this group of Ravenna athletes is a bunch of basketball players who also managed a volleyball title, not the other way around.
Madison Pernicek is headed for Wayne State to play volleyball, and she'll do very well there, but she is the best 6-foot point guard I've seen for a lon…
