When it comes to reaching peak performance for the district and state wrestling tournaments, longtime Aurora coach Bill Wofford is a big believer in the old saying that sometimes less is more.
Wofford, whose Huskies are the No. 6-rated (NSWCA) team in Class B, said there’s a regiment his teams typically follow at this point in the season. He might tweak the formula from year to year to suit the specific needs of his team, but the basic principles remain the same.
“Basically, the end of the yea…

The Nebraska Scholastic Wrestling Coaches Association provides a much-needed service of rating wrestlers and teams throughout the season and the coaches who volunteer their time to compile those ratings certainly deserve everyone’s thanks for tackling such a difficult task.
That said, here’s hoping Class C rater Kenny Loosvelt of Madison will take another look at Wood River in the team ratings. Currently, the Eagles are rated No. 3 as a dual team, but only No. 10 overall.
That would seem like…

Grand Island Central Catholic wrestling fans won’t have much more traveling to do this season — at least not until the state tournament.
Starting with Saturday’s Centennial Conference meet at GICC, the Class C No. 5-rated Crusaders will host three of their next four tournaments, including their home invitational on Feb. 7 and the Class C, District 3 meet Feb. 13-14. Besides the state tournament in Omaha, the only other away meet for coach Marc Starostka’s team is the Hastings St. Cecilia Invita…

In visiting with some high school wrestling coaches in recent weeks, more than one has made mention that reaching the 100-win mark isn't quite the milestone that it used to be.
While piling up 100 W's is still impressive and a feat that shouldn't be diminished -- that's four years of 25 or more victories or three years of 33 or more wins, etc. -- it apparently used to be even more of an elite mark as prep wrestlers were limited to 28 regular-season matches. That meant that the highest number of…

The new Nebraska Scholastic Wrestling Coaches' Association ratings for Classes B and C have been released and, as is the case in Classes A and D, wrestlers from the Independent coverage area are well represented.
In the Class B team ratings, Adams Central is third and Aurora is sixth after some strong early season performances. Individually, Adams Central 152-pounder Nick Lonowski is the lone area Class B grappler rated No. 1 in his weight class.
Area teams are even more dominant in Class C. C…

While Central Nebraska has established itself as a hotbed for high school volleyball in recent years, a quick scan of the Nebraska Scholastic Wrestling Coaches Association preseason ratings would have you think that area wrestlers could also be in line for a memorable season.
In Class A, Grand Island Senior High opens the season atop ratings. While Islanders’ coach Mike Schadwinkel insists that defending state champion Millard South should get the nod until someone proves the Patriots can be kn…
