The McCook Bison are coming to A-Town Friday night for a huge game with the Huskies. You know that bunch from out West? The team that runs out on the field through an inflated $6000 Helmet complete with fog paid for in full by donations?
That's the bunch. Oh, you know who their Coach is don't you? The kind of big guy that gives his wife a little kiss before each game and everybody is OK with it. Yes, Jeff Gross. The man with one of the best staffs in the State. Yea, we know the knocks.....play weak teams from the thinly populated western part of Nebraska...."let's see how they measure up with some of the Eastern powers" deal...."fell apart" in crunch time in the last 2 State Finals.
Better call a time out and check the facts about this team. Won the Class B State Title in 2002, 2003, and were runner-ups in 2004, 2005 and last season. Only blemish is a semi-final loss to eventual Champ Crete in 2006 stopped them from reaching the Title game for the 1st time in the last SIX years.
What makes this team tick. It has had 20 Thousand Yarders since 1975. They always have blinding speed and just flat out play tenacious Defense, a "D" that just doesn't commit errors very often. They have been dominant in their first 2 games, so much so that their starters have been pulled long before it has concluded and the running clock has started at the beginning of the second half both times. Gross said he won't have a 1000 Yarder this year....not enough playing time.
The Bison have 4 All-Staters returning. QB Matt Berry, who is a dazzler to watch, Kansas recruit Ty Sellers, Offensive Lineman J.D. Stone, and Linebacker Chris Schleeman. The Bison come in rated #10 in the Midwest Region of USA Today.
The only time in all the years this 1000 Yard Guy has seen McCook come close to being dominated was in the 28-7 shocker to Crete when Levorson was a Junior in the SemiFinals. If you want to know just how good McCook is, go no further than the school just to the immediate Northwest of the city. They have had to face them several times in past years including back-to-back nightmares in '03.
Now, is Aurora shaking in their fooball cleats? I'm thinking probably not. The Huskies have some gems of their own plus a steller Coaching staff led by the fine Randy Huebert. Jerry Lobeda is a good little Back and who doesn't know about Andrew Rodriguez, the first member of the Class of 2010 to receive an offer from the Big Red. Aurora knows they will have to play almost error free football to get the "W" in this one, but it is a Classic East-West Match-Up that will have all the Press from the Metro papers attending. I wouldn't miss this baby for anything. Oh, and by the way...McCook IS good, but then, also better take into consideration.....so is Aurora!
