When it comes to reaching peak performance for the district and state wrestling tournaments, longtime Aurora coach Bill Wofford is a big believer in the old saying that sometimes less is more.

Wofford, whose Huskies are the No. 6-rated (NSWCA) team in Class B, said there’s a regiment his teams typically follow at this point in the season. He might tweak the formula from year to year to suit the specific needs of his team, but the basic principles remain the same.

“Basically, the end of the year is about conditioning and your mental approach,” Wofford said. “You’ve got to get in their heads — that’s the hardest part of coaching.”

As far as practices go, Wofford said he usually sharpens and shortens his team’s workouts as the end of the season nears.

“Our practices now are short, but they’re intense and the kids know it coming in,” Wofford said. “We do two hours worth of work in an hour -- it’s non-stop -- so that way you’re not beating each other up as much.

“It gets to be a lot of wear on the body this time of year, so we do a lot more drilling. There’s some head-banging, too, but it’s short and sweet.”
