The following takes place the evening of Saturday, Nov. 22, at Memorial Stadium:
5:49 p.m.: A handful of fans have already staked out their seats for the Class B state championship game. Seventy-five minutes remains on the clock before Aurora and Beatrice play to see which earns its first football state championship. Even with Aurora's upset of McCook, it seems that a majority of "expert" and message board picks go toward the Orangemen. But after seeing the way Aurora played last week -- combined with the feeling that the Huskies did do an "Ogallala" and empty their fuel tanks trying to beat the Bison -- I'm predicting Aurora 28, Beatrice 24 (pick subject to change a dozen times over the next three hours).
6:33 p.m.: Good crowds have filed in on both sides. It's tough to tell from the press box for sure, but it looks close to equal between the Beatrice fans on the east side and the Aurora fans on the west. It's been a good day for orange and black considering Syracuse's win over Notre Dame. Of course, it's also been a good day for red and white if a bowl trip destination of Jacksonville is preferred over El Paso.
7:30 p.m.: Aurora coach Randy Huebert continued to roll the dice in the postseason, and it paid off. The Huskies converted a fourth-and-1 from their own 46 en route to a scoring drive. Jerry Lobeda's 31 yard run to the 18 was the big play, and Tyler McDonald carried it in from the one. After a missed PAT kick (those can haunt you), Huskies lead 6-0 with 1:43 left in the first.
7:36 p.m.: Beatrice driving but faces third-and-1 on the Aurora 42. The Orangemen's first drive was stopped by a bad snap out of shotgun formation. Neither defenses is having much success at stopped its opponent yet.
7:42 p.m.: Beatrice converted on two third-down plays en route to taking the lead. Garrett Bruhn went up the middle for 13 yards for the score, and after the made PAT kick (those can help you), Beatrice leads 7-6 with 9:11 left in the half.
8:05 p.m.: The score stands 7-6 at the half. Long drives were the story of the first half, with each team only having the ball three times. Beatrice went 61 yards in 4:56 on its last chance, but came up empty after reaching the 19 when quarterback Justin Coleman was stripped by Nathan Suck on fourth-and-4. The way teams are moving, I'll stick with a 28-24 prediction. Scoring should pick up in the second half.
8:39 p.m. After a halftime long enough to get a nice nap in, Aurora took the ball 84 yards to go up 12-7. Suck broke free on a short pass for 32 yards on third-and-4 from the Aurora 22, and Tyler McDonald later found Josh Bart for a 26-yard pass. Jerry Lobeda sped into the right side of the end zone for a with 7:46 on the clock in the third. Let the scoring begin...
8:59 p.m.: Make that "let the scoring stop." After three possessions combined to generate one first down, the Huskies are again on the move at the end of the third. They'll have the ball second-and-6 at the Beatrice 39. McDonald is the story so far for Aurora. He has rushed for 102 yards and passed for 107. That's balance.
9:02 p.m.: Add to McDonald's story. He kept it on a zone-read for a 29-yard score, then saw his two-point pass get deflected right to Lobeda. It's 20-7 Huskies with 11:45 left, and it's looking like a charmed night for Aurora in front of 4,754 fans.
9:20 p.m.: Beatrice has made it interesting. Bruhn scores from the 6 to cap off an 89-yard drive. Aurora's lead has shrunk to 20-14 with 6:34 left. Huskies could use another time-consuming drive here...
9:28 p.m.: Cue the dramatic music. Beatrice has 3:34 to go 80 yards...
9:37 p.m.: Aurora takes over on downs, Beatrice no time outs. State title time.
10:03 p.m.: The Class B state title has been passed to Aurora. Time to make room in the trophy case.
