Blue Hill won the Class C-2 State Championship game the old fashioned way.
The Bobcats used a grind-it-out offense and a clever defensive scheme designed to smother every pass reciever that Archbishop Bergan sent out to catch a pass. BH Head Coach Porter said prior to the game that the plan was to put almost no pressure on QB Riley Gross and if he completed a pass they would have almost everybody dropped back in pass coverage and snuff out the receiver immediately after a catch...........worked like a charm!
The Bobcats limited Bergan to 120 yards total offense and allowed only two receptions over 10 yards each all morning, the longest going for 12 yards. Blue Hill only gained a Total of 179 yards themselves for the game, all but 13 coming on the ground. Who'd have thought it possible to win a State Title game with a 179 yards of offense?
Defense wins games, kids!
It was a sweet win for the Bobcats, who were in their 3rd straight Championship game at Memorial Stadium and the 3rd time proved to be the charm. When Riley Bonifas scored fromm 5 yards out with 9:19 remaining in the game, I knew a 2-touchdown lead in this game would be an obstacle far to huge for the Knights to overcome. The fact the Fremont Bergan had two key players that were 130 Sophomores was pretty impressive though. Quarterback Riley Gross is listed at 137 and RB/DB Josh Boggs is in the program at 131. Both players start on both sides of the ball.
Also, Blue Hill Fullback Nathan Petska finished the season with 1,168 rushing yards, all earned the hard way, right into the heart of every defense he faced. One sports scribe in the press box described BH's offense as being "not even vanilla", but "Not flavored at all". Boring? Won a Championship didn't it, and I'll bet those Bobcats players would play boring football any day of the week with those results.
