Here are my picks for the up coming boys state tournament. Sorry I couldn’t pick all the area teams to win, but some have really tough first-round matchups.
The toughest was Hampton. The Hawks head for coach Jerry Eickhoff’s final weekend of action after 40 years in the business and they have to open state play against No. 1 Ewing. Ouch. Eickhoff will have his team ready, but this is going to be a tough one. If the Hawks can keep the score in the 40s they have a shot. Litchfield will also have a tough opener in D-2 against Hayes Center.

The championship game for C-1 may well be in the semifinals. I think Hastings St. Cecilia will get past North bend Central, but then the defending C-1 champs will have to play either Boys Town or Pierce. That should be a great semifinal. Chadron should come out of the other side of the bracket, but the Cardinals will have their hands full against whoever wins the St. Cecilia side.

Ravenna has a great shot to get to the finals in Class C-2 with Freeman in the other side of the bracket.

Giltner opens state play against Class D-2 No. 1 Bruning-Davenport. Definitely a tough match up for a very good Hornets’ team. Also in D-1, Burwell opens against Omaha Nation. Not an easy game by any means, but one I think the Longhorns can win.
