A piece by my Omaha buddy, Will Cummings, reminded me that my favorite Track and Field event should be a real treat to watch this season. I love the sprints, and with the hopeful return of one of my 100 Meter Champion/1000 Yard Rusher hero, Kohlman Adema-Schulte of Millard West soon, this 2009 Track year should be a humdinger.
Kohlman-Adema Schulte is recouping from surgery in late February to correct TWO hernias he had from the beginning of last FB season. The Sprint King is also working to rehab a torn abductor muscle, but may still be aiming for a limited return in the Columbus Invite this Saturday, the 4th. Koehlman's mom, Kristi, told me her talented son has his sites set on being 100% by the time the Metro Meet rolls around. She also indicated he is feeling around 80% at the present time and will try the 100 and 4x1 in Columbus this Saturday. The NW Missouri State football signee made shambles of a very talented 100 field last spring, blazing to a :10.67 win, and has high hopes of bettering the Meet record of :10.6, set by Creighton Prep's Ricky Davis in '87 and tied by Ronnie Doss of Benson in '93. Adema-Schulte left the field far back in the rear view after about 30 Meters in that amazing victory.

Actually, the first THREE placers in the 100 and 5 of the first 6 finishers return in '09. You certainly have to consider the speedy Kearney duo of Vinny Molina and Josh Mead, the quick 1000 Yarder, Michael Burris of Papio South, and the talked about Sophomore speed merchant from Bellevue West, Dominque Hawkins. You never know what can happen with muscle bulk over a year's time, but what if the O. Burke track people decide to run Stephon Washington in that 100? He already is the undisputed king of the 300IH, and with a quick start, he might be able to be a force in the 100.......the 200 for sure. Scary thing about Burke is they already have a legit sprinter in Jack Marousek, who ran a :22.4/200 Meters in the State Finals last year. Omaha NW football flash, Antaries Daniels has already bolted to a :06.2 in the 60 in an indoor meet. Can you say Sweet Sprint Corp for 2009!

Also seems the the "sprint well" has gone dry in Lincoln as far as Class A goes. Been awhile, hasn't it? Where have guys like Andy Birkel gone? Suprising Andrew Hamann of Lincoln Lutheran brought some of the glory back to the Capital City last year by slamming the 100, 200 and 400, leaving many folks (including yours truly) saying "who?" In Class B, there will be no Devin Johnson of GINW catching Boys Town's Erskin Williams in the final strides of the 100, but the BT runner returns this season and is capable of possibly going sub :10.8.
In Class D, Grant Gebhardt was a flyer for North Loup-Scotia last year, but now is at Burwell....same gig, different uniform. Gebhardt will be a force in the "D" sprints, along with Ansley's Wesley Slack. "C" looks pretty wide open right now in the short races, but surely there will be an emerging star that will surprise everyone by season's end.

A final thought is a wish for decent weather for the thin clads this spring. In Nebraska, that may be a stretch but by the time late May rolls around these talented sprinters will most likely to turn some heads, especially Adema-Schulte if he is 100%.
