The first of several area girls basketball conference tournament finals is set.
On Saturday, Twin River and Friend will face off for the final Central Eight Tournament title before the conference disbands. The Titans (10-3) are favored to beat the 7-7 Friend squad to add one final Central Eight trophy to its collection.
Also on Saturday, the Goldenrod Conference will crown its tournament champion in St. Paul. The semifinal pairings of Elba vs. North Loup-Scotia and Burwell vs. Spalding/Spalding Academy will be held on Friday. North Loup-Scotia, which has won the last three conference tournaments, edged Elba by one on Jan. 13. Burwell and Spalding/SA are meeting for the first time this season. An NLS-Spalding/SA final would be interesting since the Knights outscored NLS by 20 points in the fourth quarter to rally for a 63-47 win earlier this month.
More conference action gets underway next week, including the Centennial and Central Conference tourneys. The Central Conference is loaded with Class B No. 1 Seward, No. 2 Crete and No. 5 Holdrege. Northwest and Central City will play a quarterfinal to get a chance to join those teams in Holdrege later in the week. The Bison beat the Vikings in the season opener, but both teams are much improved since that game, so this should be an interesting one.
Grand Island Central Catholic hosts Lincoln Lutheran in the first round of the Centennial Conference on Monday. The winner gets the challenge of playing Class C-2 No. 3 Aquinas in the quarterfinals.
