Ewing Jumps on St. Francis Early To Snare D-2 Crown - 49-24
Humphrey St. francis must have thought Brett Kaczor was in more than one place at a time in the Class D-2 State Football Championship this morning. The game, played in very chilly temperatures and a stiff North breeze that blew the ball down the field on several occassions, was a showcase for the Ewing Senior Quarterback/Linebacker.
Kaczor, a sure bet for All-State, ran for 117 yards on 20 carries, was 10 of 11 passing for 160 yards, and blew up several St.Frans running plays by getting 10 solo tackles and 7 assists. Ewing took the ball on their opening drive on the St. Francis 31 and took just three plays and 34 seconds to score with Kaczor running in from the six. The Fliers fumbled on their own 24 yard on the very next possession, and Ewing recovered and the Kaczor hit Austin Kaczor for a 5 yd. TD seven plays later, and the Tigers were on their way. They scored once more in thre first quarter to make it 21-0 and St. Francis never seemed to recover. The Fliers, who ran one of the most basic, run-it-down-your-throat offenses in 8-Man football (and VERY efficiently), may have been too one-dimentional for the talented Tiger squad, that had a roster of only 17 players. Jr. Matt Korus, St, Francis 1,500+ rusher was pretty much kept in check, rushing for 105 yards in 27 totes. The Fliers appeared to be bothered by the bone-chilling temperatures, putting the ball on the ground 6 times. Brett Kaczor ended up rushing for 3 touchdowns and passing for two more, having a hand in all but two scores.
Yes, times are good in Ewing in both boys and girl's athletics, and the 2008 Football team can add their first ever State Championship Trophy to the already swelling awards case.
