GI after volleyball again
Both Grand Island and Kearney submitted bids to host the state volleyball tournament for 2010 and 2011as the cities once again try to wrestle the tournament away from Lincoln.
The Lincoln Journal-Star reports the capital city's bid included a cash incentive to be used for facility rental of $60,000. That's up from $55,000 from the last bid two years ago.Lincoln's bid proposed to use the Devaney Center for finals in 2010 and 2012 and the NU Coliseum in 2011. The Coliseum isn't available if the Huskers have a home football game on the same day.
Grand Island's bid was to use the Heartland Events Center, Hastings College gym and gymnasiums at Grand Island Senior High, Hastings, Grand Island Central Catholic and Northwest High School. The bid also offered $20,000 over costs if awarded the tournament four three years and $12,000 over for two years.
Kearney's proposal was to use UNK's Health and Sports Center, the First Tier Events Center and gymnasiums at Kearney High, Kearney Catholic and Gibbon High School. Kearney's bid includes $65,000 from the Kearney Vistitors Bureau for the firstyear, $67,500 for the second and $70,000 for the third.
Officials were told a decision could come Thursday but might not be available until Friday.
