Last season was a down one overall for girls basketball teams in central Nebraska.
Of the 44 teams in The Independent's coverage area, only two qualified for the state tournament -- Grand Island Central Catholic and North Loup-Scotia. Both were ousted in the first round.
Each of those teams was hit hard by graduation and faces question marks this year.
So with only three area teams in the Omaha World-Herald's preseason rankings -- Class C-2 No. 1 Ravenna, C-2 No. 8 Kenesaw and D-1 5 Giltner -- it appears to be an unpredictable season in this part of the state.
Several teams return a majority of their starting lineups and should be on the upswing. But it may take a while to figure out the pecking order and who may be in contention of a state tournament trip in three months.
