Clint Belina rushed for 310 yards on 37 carries and scored SIX touchdowns to lead Howells to a 46-21 win in the State Class D-1 Football Championship played tonight at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln in 14 degree wind chills. The Junior RB also clinched the State Rushing crown by running for an incredible 2,478 yards in 13 games in '08.
The Bobcats scored on their first 4 drives and were never threatened after that, jumping to a 26-0 lead, and stretching it to 40-7 at the half. Belina scored on runs of 5,2,16,4, 3, and 26 yards on his way to the huge night. Things just seem to go wrong for Axtell mailny because of the efficient Howells "D" and were magnified on the last play of the first half. Axtell came out and lined up with a Center and quarterback on one side of the field and the remaining 6 on the opposite side. QB Spencer Fecht took the snap, faded back and tossed a pass the the now eligible center (Brock Peterson), but the throw was tipped by defensive lineman Cody hegeman, who returned it 12 yards for the score.
You would be hard pressed to find a team as successful as Mike Speir's Howells team recently. 6 straight D-1 Titles before a 2 tear stint in 11-man, and another added Title tonight in their first year back down in the 8-Man ranks. Might just be seeing the beginning of a dynesty here and Belina returns next season to haunt the D-1 ranks again.
