Oh Boy, fasten your seat belts for the team race in this one because Burwell and Laurel-Concord are gonna take this one to the wire. Matter of fact, Laurel-Concord is going to have to win that 1,600 Meter Relay, outrunning everybody to the wire to pull off the "V".
Here is my take on the Final Team standings: (Can they saw the Trophy in half?)
Burwell 58
Laurel-Concord 58
Wisner-Pilger 34
Hastings St. Cecilia 30
Thayer Central 26
Loup City 26
Tri County 26
OK, I guess if you predict a tie for the Championship, you'd better be able to explain how you arrived at the final point totals. Here is where I predict both Burwell and Laurel-Concord's points will come from:
Burwell - A sweet start for the Longhorns as 1000 Yarder Jake Holmquist and Darcy Huffman grab 1st and 2nd in the Pole Vault. Derek Snyder wins the 800, Holmquist wins the 110HH, NL-Scotia transfer Grant Gebhardt sprints to a runner-up in the 400, Holmquist gets 2nd in the 300IH, and the 1600 Relay comes out of the slow heat for a 5th place finish.
Laurel-Concord - The Bears get a 2nd from 1000 Yarder Justin Hart in the Long Jump. Hart also grabs a 2nd in the 100 and a 3rd in the 200. 400 Meter Relay just misses and gets 2nd, Ezra Schanz wins the Shot and nabs a 2nd in the Discus, and that 1,600 Relay comes through with a victory and forges a tie with the Longhorns.
There are variables here, as you can see. The FB running backs, Hart and Holmquiest have to come through BIG TIME for their respective squads Hart has chased Randolph's Blake Rethwisch all season and now Seth Wiedel poses an added threat in that 100 and 200 and Zach Baake of Hartington can fly in the Two also. I'm wondering by the District times if Rethwisch is not fully healthy.....only speculation.
If Gordon-Rushville's Garrett Schaal is healthy, he'll be a kick to watch in the 400. Cross Country ace Jimmy O'Keefe of St. Cecilia has a great chance to sweep the 1600 and 3200.
Derek Foster and Brian Hubbert of Elm Creek are going to grab some points, Hubbert in the jumps and Foster in the hurdles. And who knows, St. Paul's Derek Maddox may just decide not to look back to see who's in the rear view mirror and slam both sprints....stay focused, Derek. Loup City has a couple of dandies in Jumper Jordon Smith and of course, weight ace Kaleb Henry, who is going to make a serious charge at the All-Class Gold in the Discus. He's a D-1 Track man, ya know, and that is a rare breed in this State.
Once again, the Sprints should be a real treat here. Just a few points either way by Burwell or LC could slide the Trophy in one of their directions. You also have to remember Burwell was within FOUR points of the Title a year ago and some of these same kids were around.
The updated weather forecast is even better than before with Friday temps in the upper 70's and wind out the South only 5 to 15......SWEET!
